In 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic decision via McGirt v. Oklahoma.
The Honorable Justices held that crimes involving Native Americans on tribal lands may be prosecuted by either the tribal authorities or the federal government, and not just the state government.
Beginning with "The Five Tribes", the SCOTUS observed that under binding treaties from the 1800's, much of Oklahoma (Indian Territory) should legally be considered sovereign reservation lands.
Sovereign Indian land has grown through federal court rulings to encompass the reservations of more Indian tribes in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma is home to 39 federally recognized tribes. Experienced legal and investigative help continues to be a critical need.
